Education Student Attends Graduation with Oxygen Tank, Earns Praise for Determination

There are so many things we complain about in life, that we often forget the many things we should actually be thankful for. A lot of us take everyday things like going to school for granted, but many people are actually struggling to even attend school due to extreme poverty or some illness.

A young man from Sultan Kudarat recently made waves online after he showed his determination to graduate by attending the ceremony even though someone had to carry his oxygen tank.

Joemar Kenik Mangkok received praise from netizens for his drive to complete his studies even though he is critically ill.

Even as a child, Joemar had been sickly but smart. According to his sister, Lyn Mangkok Ayob, her brother was in and out of hospitals yet was also a representative in many contests and activities, even attending regional events.

Because they were poor, Joemar did not really have access to proper medical care and was only diagnosed with a rheumatic heart some 5 years ago. Already in college and studying Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, Major in Math, when his condition worsened.

The aspiring teacher tried his best to attend his classes despite his condition, yet he ended up having to quit many times because he spent most of his time at the hospital or bedridden at home.

Moving from one school to another, Joemar finally found an ally in Southern Mindanao Institute of Technology Inc. as the school allowed him to complete the course even while he could not always attend his classes. He was able to complete his requirements even while at the hospital.

Ecstatic that he was finally able to graduate from college, even at age 25, Joemar attended the Graduation rites on a wheelchair. He was wheeled to the stage as he received his diploma – and someone was carrying an oxygen tank so he could breathe.

It was a struggle for him to be there, yet this young man’s determination is admirable! He refused to give up and plans to pass the board exams soon.

But his happiness was short-lived as he struggled to breathe right after graduation; thus, he was rushed to the hospital where he was taken to the ICU.

Joemar’s determination was amazing. Many are hoping he would get better and that he would pass the board exams to fulfill his dream of becoming a teacher. His story remains an inspiration to many…
