Teachers to DepED: ‘Brigada Eskwela’ Should Not Be Treated a Contest Because It Goes Against the Spirit of Volunteerism

Teachers Dignity Coalition (TDC) calls upon the Department of Education (DepED) not to make Brigada Eskwela a contest among schools because it defeats the purpose of volunteerism.

Members of the Philippine National Police spend time in helping the teachers prepare their classrooms for the opening of classes on June 3, 2019.

While TDC supports the implementation of the annual school maintenance activity, it believes that DepED should not make it a competition among schools on different levels.

“Kung tunay na bolunterismo, hindi na kailangang gawing paligsahan ang Brigada Eskwela,” TDC stated.

The said teachers group also enlightened the public an earlier reports coming from the field that some public schools make the participation of learners and their parents to the “Brigada Eskwela” a “requirement” for enrollment.

Yearly, the Department of Education gives “Brigada Eskwela Best Implementing Schools” awards to the schools both in elementary and secondary who exert exemplary efforts during the implementation of Brigada Eskwela.

According to DepED Memorandum No.36, s.2019 which contains the Implementing Guidelines for Brigada Eskwela 2019, the “Brigada Eskwela Best Implementing Schools” are categorized based on the table below:

Brigada Eskwela 2019

The Department of Education (DepEd) will conduct the Brigada Eskwela 2019 from May 20 to 25, 2019 with the theme Matatag na Bayan para sa Maunlad na Paaralan.

The Brigada Eskwela is the National Schools Maintenance Week that aims to bring together all education stakeholders to participate and contribute their time, effort, and resources to prepare public school facilities for the opening of the school year in June.
