DepED to Hire 10,000 Public School Teachers Before SY 2019-2020 Starts

The Department of Education is looking to hire 10,000 new public school teachers before the 2019-2020 School Year starts. The hiring is in accordance with the 2019 national budget of DepED which also includes the construction of 80,000 new classrooms. This has been confirmed by DepED Secretary Leonor Magtolis-Briones on Monday, May 27, 2019 in an interview with DZMM radio.

During the said interview, Secretary Briones said the government’s move to hire more teachers is in line with the plan of reducing the size of classes to 45 students in the grade school and 25 students for kindergarten.

Secretary Briones also added that DepED wants to match the teachers’ expertise with the subjects they’ll be teaching. According to the secretary, the hiring process was delayed because of the halt on the approval of the 2019 national budget and since the national budget is now approved, the salaries of those who have been hired while waiting will now be processed.

The secretary also added that aside from the 20, 754 pesos basic pay of entry level teachers, they are also privileged of different benefits such as two months vacation with pay, Christmas vacation, cash allowance, hazard pay, hardship allowance, insurance and a lot more.

DZMM Radio host Ted Failon also sought clarification that there is no shortage on the number of applicants for new teaching positions to which the secretary agreed.
