Despite working as construction worker to help support his family, Michael did not quit school. He studied at Gueguesangen Integrated School and was even quite active in various extra-curricular activities. He was also elected as the president of the supreme student government. Such is this young man’s impressive status in school.
Michael’s father works as messenger, earning Php10,000 a month. His mother is a dressmaker but her job does not have regular pay. So, Michael decided to help out by becoming a construction worker during his free time.
During summers, he spends every workday helping out at the construction site, earning Php250 per day. He saves the money so he and his siblings can buy uniforms and school supplies when the school year begins again.

Despite doing his best in school and also working to help support his family, Michael hears bad rumors about him in school. But he does not pay them any heed, saying that he simply wants to focus on his goals.
“Meron pong mga taong hindi naniniwala sa atin. So payo ko po sa inyo, ‘wag na po natin silang intindihin at mag-focus lang tayo sa goals natin,” the young man explained.
Michael’s father, Marlon Español, feels thankful for his eldest but also takes pity on the young man who feels he has to do this to help the family.

“Nagpapasalamat ako sa anak ko na kahit hirap na hirap kami, nakapagtapos siya nang ganu’n,” Tatay Marlon said.
But the young man insists that he does not mind. He hopes to make his parents’ lives easier.
“Kung kaya ko naman po kasi, ayaw ko nang iasa sa kanila,” Michael said, explaining that he doesn’t ask his parents for allowance.
As he graduates as valedictorian, Michael inspires many young students to do their best in their studies because even a construction worker like him was able to achieve his dreams…
