A young man recently went viral after it was revealed that he works as barangay tanod (village watchman) at night to support his studies. But he’s not just graduating from his course in Civil Engineering, he is also completing his college education with flying colors as he graduates cum laude!
Janryll Tan lives in Barangay Kalubihan, Cebu City. His father, Jerry Tan, works as ‘Lupong Tagapamayapa’ at the Barangay and also sidelines as habal-habal driver to support his family.

A brilliant student who was the valedictorian back when he was in Elementary, Janryll was determined to finish his college education despite coming from a poor family.
Seeing that Janryll is determined to study in college, Barangay Kalubihan chairman Rex Millan allowed him to become one of the barangay tanods wherein he could earn Php6,500 per month.
His honorarium as barangay tanod helped Janryll support his studies at the University of Cebu (UC) where he took up Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Despite his busy schedule as a student and having to fulfill various requirements in school, Janryll did not fail in his duties as barangay tanod. This earned him praise from Brgy. Chairman Millan.
According to Millan, Janryll had also been the treasurer of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) in the village and had a stint as CCTV camera operator for the barangay as well.
Janryll’s father was also proud of his son’s determination to graduate. He proudly shared that he would often see his son trying his best to study while also carrying on with his duties for the barangay.

After graduation, Janryll is planning to focus on his reviews for the board exams as he hopes to become a licensed civil engineer. He hopes that he will continue to receive blessings as he works on his license.
Considered an inspiration by many people, Janryll advised other young people to not give up on their dreams. If their parents could not afford to send them to school, Janryll advised them to also find an extra job like him as it is possible to find a balance for work and studies so they could still go to school and complete their college education.
